POLICE will be cracking down on street drinking, drug abuse and street prostitution in Desborough Road for the next two weeks.

Thames Valley Police have launched Operation Grom in partnership with Wycombe District Council after worries that residents feel unsafe in their own homes.

Residents at the Neighbourhood Action Group in the area highlighted the problems as they complained of anti social behaviour.

PC Tom Kenney, a neighbourhood officer involved in the campaign said: "We have planned this two week operation to instil confidence in the residents.

“We need to find the sources of this problem and cut them off at the stem. Street drinkers are one of the main things. We also have a problem with street prostitution - girls who are attracted to drink and drugs.

“We will arrest them if need but we want to refer them to the appropriate authorities.”

As well as more police officers out on foot the council are sending out extra parking patrols, after residents said they found it difficult to park by their homes, and carrying out checks on taxi drivers.

PC Kenney added: "It is all about making residents feel confident. At the moment people down there are living in fear.

"Everyone has been working hard to deal with this problem already but we are making it a more cohesive effort.”

Members of the local community will go out with the police to see what they have to deal with, as will a Bucks Free Press reporter.
