Mystery as WW2-style plane lands in Flackwell Heath field

Mystery as WW2-style plane lands in field Mystery as WW2-style plane lands in field

POLICE were called to Flackwell Heath after three youngsters saw a full size 'spitfire-style' aeroplane land in a field.

Mystery surrounds its landing this afternoon as there was no sign of the pilot when the children and police arrived.

Bertie Kerby-Verness and Rachel Perham, both 12, saw the plane from Fennels Way as it grounded in a field at Heath End Farm, off Spring Lane and next to the M40, at around 4.30pm.

About an hour later a police helicopter hovered overhead and officers were wading through the muddy field towards the plane.

Sergeant Scott Long said at the scene: “It's a bit of a strange one – it doesn't seem there's been an emergency landing or any injuries.

“There's no sign of the pilot but it looks like a replica World War Two Chinese fighter plane.

"There's nothing we can really do tonight so we are going to leave it and deal with it in the morning."

Bertie, who goes to Furze Platt Senior School in Maidenhead, said: “We saw the wing dip as it came over the field. It looked like it crashed so we ran over but there was no one here. It's really weird because we have no idea where it came from.”

The plane has symbols and red stars on its body and wings.

Is it a pothole spotter?

The Police left it there as they were not keen on takeaways.

Saw the helicopter, very strange turn of events though. You would have thought the pilot would stay with the plane. It would not have been easy to land in that field as most of it is sloping.

Should not have left it in the field though, they will return in the morning to find bricks under the wheels :-))

Has April 1st come round already?!

And is it snowing in Flackwell Heath?!

No need for any other contenders to the most bizarre story of the year competition!!

I look forward to hearing the full story!

The winf probably dipped as he was side-slipping, which is what you'd do trying to get into a tight spot.

'The Flackwell Heath Triangle'...

Had to be.

Maybe it's an aerial gritter a.k.a. 'gritfire'...!

Sorry to post in the wrong place but I'm desperate - our cat has gone missing and we've had missed calls from the vet but unfortunately we were out at work, when we called the emergency number they couldn't help. If anyone took a black cat (that was probably hit by a car) to Crossroads vets in Hazlemere today please can you reply? We don't know if he's alive or not :(((( Thanks all

But why would he be flying that low over Flackwell in the first place?

Sideslip+land=crash? No evidence of a crash.

Plus da Change must be right, its a bermuda triangle

If that were true, I'd buy her a a eurofighter so she could get away quicker.

Just imagine fleeing China in a replica plane only to land in Wycombe....
~
No doubt the pilot took one look at the state our town is in and wishes he had stayed back in China....

I wonder if the BFP bothered phoning Wycombe Air Park to ask about it?

Or is 2+2 too hard? :)

Why a replica plane? :)

Looks like a YAK to me i think theres a few that fly from Duxford.. Why the pilot didnt stay at the seen is very strange. Didnt anyone get the aircraft number and see what the flight plan was??? Will be interesting to see what happens!!

It's a Nanchang, a Chinese copy of the Yak.

Sounds like a bum steer.

Copper's details in report lacking, name only given.

Kids 12-years old 'witnesses' of the incident also lacking, no names.

Check out, that: that named copper a) exists; b) spoke to BFP. Timing sounds dodgy, even before half-term.
Elaborate. Public servants know their Station.

It's a Nanchang, a Chinese copy of the Yak. The Russian Yak has more of a rounded tailfin. Just seen it and it looks like it came to a stop only 10 metres after hitting the deck in thick mud. No pilot? Ghost plane? Just glad it's not in my loft!

Yeah but why leave his plane? Surely people are taught unless you are in danger, you stay with the plane and call the authorities?

He did inform the necessary authorities as he was supposed to.

Once you have done that and made the aircraft safe, no point hanging around and getting cold and muddy is there?

as i write now they are trying to move the plane off the muddy field, its quite a task, seeing as p collins says its a giant airfix model, stare out the window man.

they are using wooden planks and moving about 2 metres at a time

WycombeBorn&Bred says...

It look's like a Nanchang CJ 6 or possibly a 6A due to the wing dihedral. This is actually not a copy of YAK 18 where as the CJ 5 was basically a Yak-18 built under license in China.

I can solve this mystery, I saw Steve fossett jump out the plane and leg it, I think he ran over a black cat whilst landing.

ly he was hit by a car and died instantly. The ****hole driver didn't even stop. Someone else picked him up and took him the vets and they called to let us know. Sweet dreams my baby I miss you so much xx

So the plane was travelling from Denham to Maidenhead – a journey that would take about half an hour in a car and probably less than 10 minutes in a plane – the pilot should not have taken off over a populated area close to Heathrow if bad weather might have caused a problem. The fact that no one was hurt was probably down to the skill of the pilot but also to luck. As the plane made a successful landing and there is no suggestion of engine failure my guess would be that the batteries in the pilots GPS system were flat.
