A FILM giving a fascinating insight into The Bucks Free Press 50 years ago has been uncovered – and you can watch it below.

Former employee John Davies has handed us the 14 minute film which details different aspects of life at the newspaper.

The film – thought to be shot in the late 1950s or early 1960s – visits the editorial and advertising office in Castle Street and the former printing works in Gomm Road.

This was when the title was owned by Merritt and Hatcher and had Arthur Church in the editor’s chair.

Other titles including the Catholic Herald, Record Mirror and Modern Poultry Keeping were printed at Gomm Road.

The film explains the intricate process used to create pages. Now pages can be completed within minutes on a computer screen.

Mr Davies, 77, of Highlea Avenue, Flackwell Heath, said: “I think it was lost for many many years until there was a bit of a clear-out.”

The former compositor, who worked at the title from 1960 to 1988, said: “It certainly takes me back.”

Staff moved from Castle Street to Gomm Road in the 1970s. The title left Gomm Road in 2005 to its present premises in Station Road, Loudwater.
