A SWAN which found its way onto the M40 by High Wycombe has been rescued by two Highways Agency officers.

Around 1pm today a terrified swan was causing traffic to slow down as it sat in the hard shoulder by Junction 3 (High Wycombe) northbound after walking down the slip road.

Highways officers, Henry O'Callaghan and Gary Richards, rescued the animal from the road and took it to the Loudwater Tesco's car park at 1.30pm.

The young bird was then picked up by Swan Rescue at 2.30pm and taken to safety.

Tim Roberts spokesman for the Highways Agency said that most of their highways officers are trained as part of regular training to be able to deal with a variety of animals.
