A ROADS boss today said she only has ‘a fraction’ of cash needed to sort out potholes – but said ‘every little helps’.

Councillor Valerie Letheren issued a statement as readers continue to raise complaints with The Bucks Free Press about the state of the roads.

Buckinghamshire County Council has put in an extra £2m to combat potholes created and opened up by the recent snow.

But Cllr Letheren, cabinet member for transportation, says an extra £120m is needed. Council chiefs say the authority is massively underfunded by Government.

She said: “Whilst we recognise that this amount is only a fraction of what is needed to bring all the roads up to standard across the County, it’s most helpful.

“We’ve listened to where residents have told us are the worst affected areas and work will start next week in the Aylesbury Vale and continue right through until the end of April”.

The council said the cash will ‘allow more significant areas of road known as plane and patching to be repaired, rather than just treating individual holes’.

Cllr Letheren said: “Look out for works happening near you in areas such as Aylesbury, Wendover, Buckingham, Haddenham and Wing to name but a few.

“As they say, every little helps.”

The authority was considering slashing next year’s pothole budget in half but backtracked after discovering it would get more council tax as more homes have been built.
