GIRL Guides in Beaconsfield made radio contact with the counterparts around Britain during a 'Thinking Day' of activities at the weekend.

About 100 Guides, Brownies and Rainbows spent the day working towards their 'special communications' badge and were given assistance from local radio amateurs.

The group have plans to rebuild their 90-year-old wooden hut and the plans were also on display.

Recent maintenance problems have caused some meetings to be cancelled and an extra jumper is "essential wear" in the old hut. Local architect and former Brownie dad, Jonathan Heighway, was on hand to explain the plans, which were recently approved by South Bucks District Council.

The guides aim to share their new Guide HQ, in Malthouse Square, with the community and have already earmarked £145,000 of their £250,000 target to begin work. More than £500 in donations was received during Thinking Day.

Future fund raising events include a quiz night on Saturday, April 24, in the Fitzwilliam Centre, followed by a ladies’ lunch.
