A CAMPAIGN to save the last surviving Second World War destroyer has nearly achieved its goal.
HMS Cavalier is the last Second World War destroyer commissioned in 1944.
The HMS Cavalier Association needs to raise £350,000 to match grants from the National Heritage Memorial Fund to preserve the ship as a tribute to the 30,000 young men who lost their lives.
The campaign is supported by Ken Jackson, branch chairman of High Wycombe Royal British Legion
He said: "The Navy did an awfully good job and basically saved Britain during the war. We should keep certain items and certainly the last one should be preserved at public expense."
