October 1973

AMERSHAM Rural District Council has agreed in principle to an open market on Tuesdays at Amersham-on-the-Hill. It has agreed in principle to accept from the Shardeloes Estates a licence to operate the market each week, subject to financial arrangements being agreed with the Estate. The market may be sited in Sycamore Road.

October 1948

STOLEN turkeys wandered about lanes and fields in the Holtspur area on Tuesday morning when thieves were forced to abandon them after raiding Lude Farm, Wooburn.

More than 50 turkeys, worth £78, were stolen and carried off towards London in a van.

At Holtspur, the van broke down and they were forced to abandon it.

October 1923

A GARDENER of Chalfont St Giles was proceeded against for being drunk and incapable on October 7, the defendant pleaded not guilty. The arresting police officer told the court how he saw the defendant staggering about the road. Defendant - I was knocked down and don't recollect seeing the constable (laughter). He was fined half-a-crown.

October 1898

AN extraordinary attempt was made to open a grave in the historic resting place of William Penn, the illustrious Quaker, and other eminent personages, at Jordans.

Apart from the fact of desecration of a graveyard - a rare occurrence in these days - the affair created great excitement. It is unknown who tried to unearth the grave.
