A NEW hospital for psychiatric outpatients in the High Wycombe area will be opened at Harlow House, Harlow Road -- formerly a Catholic Church hall -- on September 3. It will be able to treat 40 patients a day. The week before opening there will be a series of open days for doctors, nurses and health workers from other hospitals. The conversion and extensions were authorised by High Wycombe and district hospital management committee of the Oxford Regional Hospital Board. August 1948 FIRE engines from Uxbridge and Slough raced to Iver Heath on Wednesday night in response to a call from Denham stating that there was a "glow that could be seen for miles". On arrival it was discovered the "fire" and the "glow" were caused by outdoor night shots from the filming of Once A Jolly Swagman, being filmed at Pinewood Studios. Bucks County Fire Brigade has assured itself that the call was made in the genuine belief there was a fire and that no hoax was intended. August 1923 THE lure of the river is always strong on a Bank Holiday, and especially when the sun is shining in all its glory. But it is doubtful if ever before, so many people have visited Spade Oak Reach at Bourne End as were there at the weekend. Favoured by beautiful weather, people flocked to Bourne End by thousands. The occasion was Bourne End Regatta, which was inaugurated in 1897, and any doubts which the committee may have had as to the success of the venture were quickly dispelled. August 1898 MARLOW Week has begun and competitions and activities of all kinds have started. The first heat of the "Gentlemen's Tortoise Race" was an interesting one as H J Smith had a walkover, five others who had entered not turning out. Heat two was won by R E Batting, several other competitors failing to get home. Another event was the "Decorated Cycles". Mr A E Barnard decorated his cycle as a ship's sail, while Miss K Waddell employed very effective red, white and blue flowers.
