November 1973

IN spite of all the gloom of fuel rationing, rising prices and freezing temperatures, thousands of Wycombe people were in remarkably high spirits on Saturday.

Wycombe followers went wild with joy at Loakes Park when the Wanderers' three brilliant goals in eight minutes shattered professional Newport County.

The performance put the Blues in the second round of the FA Cup competition for only the second time in club history, with a surprisingly convincing 3-1 victory.

November 1948

HIGH Wycombe furniture manufacturers will be able to make utility furniture to their own design from next Monday.

The long awaited Freedom Day was announced in the House Of Commons on Monday by the President of the Board of Trade. It was also disclosed that from Monday, the purchase tax on non-utility furniture will be cut. Manufacturers will be able to produce utility furniture of their own design within certain specifications and maximise price limits laid down by the Board of Trade.

November 1923

AT Chesham Petty Sessions last week, a smartly dressed, good-looking young fellow, of no fixed abode, was charged on remand with stealing articles to the value of £12.

Whilst travelling from London, the defendant's motorcycle broke down and he sought lodgings. A Chesham man put him up for the night, only to find that the next night clothes, a cigarette holder, mackintosh and a metal watch holder had disappeared and so had the defendant. The defendant was committed to take his trial at the next Quarter Session.

November 1898

ON Monday evening, the Duke and Duchess of York arrived by special train at Amersham Station on a visit, extending over several days, to Earl and Countess Howe at Penn House.

Although very short notice was given previous to the arrival of their Royal Highnesses, the inhabitants of Amersham did their utmost to accord them with a hearty welcome, and they did their best to decorate their quiet town.

Loud cheers were given by the spectators as the Amersham Brass Band played lively airs.
