GYM attendant Peter Williams has played down suggestions that he is a hero after he helped resuscitate a man who suffered a heart attack on a treadmill.

Retired bank manager Barrie Markham, 57, of Rectory Hill, Amersham, collapsed at Physique health and fitness centre, in the Chiltern Pools complex, Bensheim Way, Amersham, last Friday morning.

Quick-thinking Mr Williams and head of operations Gordon Hubbard began resuscitating him before contacting paramedics who took Mr Markham to Wycombe Hospital.

Mr Williams said: "As soon as you see someone in trouble the lifesaving techniques automatically kick in.

"I just went into automatic pilot. This was a team effort and we are very pleased Mr Markham is now out of intensive care."

Mr Markham's wife Jacqueline said: "If he hadn't been at the gym he would have died. The hospital said they saved his life. It's his second heart attack, but he is now out of intensive care.

"I would like to express my thanks to the gym and everyone involved in looking after him."

Mr Markham is still in Wycombe Hospital.
