FORMER Glasgow Rangers wingback Chris Vinnicombe is training with Wycombe Wanderers and will play for the Blues in Wednesday's friendly against Crystal Palace.

The former England Under-21 international is available on a free transfer having been released by Burnley. Vinnicombe was once rated as a future England World Cup star before he was hit by injuries.

Other clubs are interested in the classy, left-sided defender, who can also get forward, but Blues boss Neil Smillie is at the head of the queue.

The pacy 27-year-old has been training with Blues at RAF Halton this week and Smillie is excited about seeing him in action against Terry Venables' Palace.

Smillie said: "Someone who has played for Glasgow Rangers doesn't normally go out on trial and we are pleased to have someone of his quality in.

"He looks like a very good footballer, he's got skilful feet, a good touch and can tackle. I want us to play with more width and get crosses in next season. He looks fit and hopefully he will be the answer."

Smillie is due a slice of luck in the transfer market after receiving a string of summer setbacks.

He is smarting after missing out on top target Canadian international striker Carlo Corazzin, who, after weeks of hush-hush talks with the Wanderers boss decided to join Northampton instead.
