RESIDENTS are fighting a mobile phone company's plan for a 30 metre-high tower in Roundhead Wood, Forty Green.

The plans for a lattice tower are the latest in the area by Orange. Residents have until July 17 to put their objections to Chiltern District Council.

John Bradbury, residents' spokesman, said: "I feel that Orange and the planners have underestimated the strength of feeling here in Forty Green and the surrounding area. There is mounting evidence that these towers are a health risk and they are also horrendous eyesores."

The land on which the tower is proposed is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mr Bradbury has sent more than 100 notices to residents outlining the threat.

He added: "I don't think they realise the lengths we will go to ensure the welfare of the area."

Carol Castle, assistant chief planning officer for Chiltern District Council, said: "We sent 52 notices to residents in Forty Green informing them that a planning application had been received from Orange.

"The fact that it is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty does not mean that it is an impediment to putting up a mast or a tower."

An Orange spokesman said: "Until we are officially informed that the residents in that area have objected we cannot comment any further. As for the health risks, there is no evidence to suggest that they exist."

Richard Thorne, of Eghams Wood Road, said: "I feel it would be an utter disaster if the tower was to be built in that area."
