THOUSANDS of people are expected to turn out to watch the annual Wycombe Half Marathon on Sunday.

Spectators will line the 13-mile route from The Rye, in High Wycombe, around Flackwell Heath and Bourne End, cheering on the 600 runners who are taking part this year.

The event helps to raise thousands of pounds for local charities and organisations, including the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, Scannappeal and BBONT.

Last year the race was unofficially won by two Kenyan runners, Lewis Nyamongoi and Chris Kelong (pictured), who turned up on the day to try their luck. The pair came home a full three minutes ahead of the official winner Julian Critchlow.

Race organiser Anita Templar said the Kenyans had not registered yet this year, but a new rule means people can register on the day by paying £9.

She said: "We are looking forward to the weather not being too hot, but just right for the runners.

"It is wonderful fun and it is great fun to watch as well. The runners enjoy the support, especially first time runners at about the ten-mile mark."

A Fun Run lasting a mile and three-quarters is also taking place on The Rye on Sunday. The half-marathon starts at the Rye at 9.30am.
