THE rain held off long enough on Saturday for all four teams at the first Flackwell Heath Under 11's football tournament to battle it out for first place.

The Flackwell Heath Scorpions FC U11 invitation cup in association with the Bucks Free Press saw four clubs fight it out at the Flackwell Heath Minors Football Club grounds in Green Dragon Lane.

In the running were the Flackwell Heath Scorpions, Widmer End United, Holtspur Athletic and AFC Lightning.

Organiser David Smith from Wooburn Green said: “We have just done it as a bit of fun and a fundraiser for the team. The Flackwell Heath Minors do their own one if May.

“We are all of a similar ability. That is the whole point. Normally in the tournaments there are teams from all of the leagues but this is a nice fun day. All of the managers know each other.”

More than 60 children took part who were all under 11s with FA qualified referees keeping an eye on proceedings.

After six very close 15 minute matches Scorpions beat AFC Lightning 1-0 in the play-off while Widmer End took the trophy winning 1-0 against Holtspur in the final.

Mr Smith, 47, added: “It went perfectly. I spoke to all the managers and they all thought it was a fantastic day. The kids all had a smile on their face at the end of the day.

“In total we raised over £700 which is great as that will cover all our costs for the next season.

“It was a great day all round. The club are going to do it for every age group from now on.”

The tournament was sponsored by Lakeside Energy from Waste Ltd with operations manager, Henrik Rystedt presenting the trophy.
