He won his prize at the Improvement Awards, part of the Write Here, Write Now national writing awards for primary school children, organised by the Department for Education and Skills.

It has now been included in a book of the winning entries, published by the Oxford University Press.

Conor was selected by his teacher last year, Annalie Thorndike, to enter the Improvement Award because the of the progress he has made in literacy at school.

Fellow pupil Joshua Williams was the South East area winner with his story, The Power of the Eye.

Both received his prize at a special ceremony in the British Library in London on Tuesday.

Children's writer Gillian Cross, one of the judges, said: "It was wonderful to see such imaginative narratives developing from the start that the children were given. I enjoyed reading them all and was impressed by their variety and energy."

James Astbury, headteacher of Butlers Court School, said: "Conor wrote this story last year. We are all very pleased that he has won."

Conor received a digital camera, and the school received an illustrated dictionary and thesaurus as well as Granada learning software.

Schools minister Stephen Twigg said: "Write Here, Write Now provides an opportunity for children to develop their creativity and have fun with writing.""

The book is now on sale and a proportion of the proceeds will go to the charity Mencap.
