MULTIPLEX, the company developing High Wycombe's £180million Eden Centre, said this week that the project would go ahead.

The owners of Stannifer have been in trouble over its redevelopment of Wembley Stadium, on which it expects to lose £45m.

Its share price also plummeted when it issued a profits warning.

This led to fears that Eden might be in trouble, but on Tuesday Charles Brocklehurst, Wycombe District Council's head of property services, met the chairman of Multiplex Development UK.

Mr Brocklehurst said afterwards he had been reassured that the work would go on as planned.

On Wednesday, he reported to the council's Conservative group, after which leader Lesley Clarke said she had been "reassured".

Former council leader, Roger Colomb, who was in charge when Stannifer was selected as developers, said that Multiplex was a large operation which could soak up a mistake like Wembley "They are well capitalised and able to withstand it," he said.

Multiplex might make some changes at the fringe of its operations, but not in the Eden project, where it is both developer and builder.

Multiplex said: "The group is highly profitable and specific issues on Wembley need not concern other specific construction or development projects."

Multiplex Construction is currently undertaking 51 major construction projects. Wembley, while the most high profile in UK terms, is only one of these projects and not the largest.

Any issues concerning Wembley would not affect the timing, programme or delivery of Eden, in any way.
