A WEEKLY village walk aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles has proved so popular even schoolchildren are signing up to join.

Launched last August the Holmer Green "Simply Walk" has snowballed, regularly attracting dozens of people of all ages keen to stretch their limbs and fill their lungs with fresh air.

Pupils at Holmer Green Junior School were invited to join the scheme by Pat Simmonds and Tricia Walmsley, colleagues at Wycombe Primary Care Trust which dreamed up the scheme.

Fiona Broadbent, Simply Walk coordinator, told the Star: "It was a great idea of Pat's to involve the local school, and the response and enthusiasm has been very encouraging. I'm sure they'll all have fun whilst getting some fresh air and exercise and if we can help get children into the habit of being more active, there is a greater chance they will stay active."

The idea received an enthusiastic response from headteacher Lyn Cox and Jenny Sorensen, a Scout leader who also works at The Common school, and youngsters joined regular walkers for the first time on June 13.

Also joining the walk is Dr James Mapstone, director of public health for Chiltern and South Bucks PCT and Wycombe PCT.

Pat, a health visitor for the PCT, added: "Holmer Green School has a reputation for being involved with their local community.

"Walking is also a good form of exercise for the children and there are lots of country walks in the local area.

"Taking part in the Holmer Green Simply Walk will show them how enjoyable walking is.

"Involving the children also encourages good social interaction as they will be walking with people from their local community who they will see around the village."

The Simply Walk meets at the Baptist Church, The Common, every Monday from 10am.
