A TOP student from a Marlow school is celebrating after she picked up straight As in her A-level exams including one grade that ranks in the top five of the country for a set subject.

Danielle Zandi, 18, of Sir William Borlase's Grammar School, received all the A grades she needed to get into Oxford University this coming September, including hitting an outstanding high in English Literature.

While Marlow student Chris Record, 18, of the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe, who got one of the top five marks in physical education in the UK.

The Borlase's school, in West Street, was notified about Miss Zandi on Thursday morning that she got one of the top five A grades for the subject in the country.

This included beating off competition from almost 21,000 children who took the papers.

Miss Zandi, from Maidenhead, said: "I looked on the UCAS website before I got my results so I knew I got my place. But I was still quite nervous. I'm really happy," she added.

Miss Zandi will now study English at Oxford.

Other Borlase's students who gained straight A grades included Philly Lutter, Stephen Gunnell, Claire Keegan, Angharad Pereira Rego, Tim Gutteridge, Henrietta Oliver, and Rachel Brookes.

Mr Gutteridge, of Oxford Road, Marlow, who will study at Warwick University, said: "I went into the toilet to open my results because I was quite nervous but I feel good now."

In total, Borlase's picked up a staggering 97 per cent pass rate, which saw most of the 146 students go home happy.

Of all exams taken, 65 per cent achieved A to B grades, and only three exam papers were failed in the whole school.

Headteacher, Dr Peter Holding, said the pass rate was as high as 99 per cent if General Studies grades were to be ignored.

He said: "We are absolutely delighted with them. They are very, very good results. It is a credit to hard work by both pupils and staff alike.

"Nearly all of them got into the university of their choice."

Meanwhile, students at Great Marlow School in Bobmore Lane were celebrating after achieving a 94 per cent pass rate from its 40 or so pupils.

More than 50 per cent achieved A, B, and C grades, while 80 per cent of Art students were awarded with A grades.

Outside the school, a group of friends celebrated their success. Emma Davenport, Clare Goodwin, Francesca Rowe and Charlotte Woolley, all 18, were looking forward to life after sixth form.

Miss Woolley, of Marlow Bottom, received a B in Drama and Geography, and a C in Art.

She said: "I wasn't sure I would get the right grades but I have been accepted into Lancaster which is the one I wanted. The school has been amazing we've had some great times."

Deputy headteacher, Linton Nash, said: "This is the first lot to spend seven years with us and not surprisingly they got really good results.

"They have been excellent and on the whole their results reflect their efforts."
