MORE than 200 people set up camp at Dorneywood last weekend as the 4th Beaconsfield Scout Group celebrated its 100th birthday.

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts joined parents and siblings for the traditional camp, which group leader Richard Jones hailed “a great success”.

A group of ex-Scouts provided adventure activities for the youngsters. There was a caving system, climbing wall, rope bridges and water slides, with a BBQ and camp fire on Saturday evening.

Mr Jones said: “The weather was perfect - some of the parents had never been camping before but they were complete converts by the end.”

The Scout troop was founded as 1st Beaconsfield in 1910 by Bailey Gibson, a local solicitor and met in a local hall.

In 1947 the troop opened its first dedicated HQ hut in Meadow Lane, though it was burned down in either 1948 or 1950 and rebuilt on the same site.

In 1958 Lady Burnham opened a new hut in Ronald Road and the troop joined with 3rd Beaconsfield in 1967 - becoming 4th Beaconsfield.
