BIG rock n' roll stars from the 1960s will take to the stage as part of a new music night in Amersham.

The Polish Club, in Raans Road, will be taken over once a month by familiar faces from the 60s music scene starting in September.

The White Eagle Hall will host the Amersham Rock n' Roll Club, a music night organised to bring live music back to the dancefloor.

Ralph Gowling, 57, of Northdown Road, Chalfont St Peter, who works for the Reuters news agency, is helping to organise the night. He said: "We start on September 9 with a big launch night.

"People from the business are still performing and there is a lot of interest in rock n' roll. We want as many people as possible to come along and enjoy the music."

He added: "We want to revive the tradition of music at the Polish Club and get people interested in rock n' roll."

The first club night will bring singer Craig Douglas and Billy Fury's backing band, The Tornados, to the club.

Rock n' roll enthusiast Mr Gowling is passionate about music from the 60s and wants to get stars from the era performing to as many people as possible while they still can.

He said: "The Tornados recorded the worldwide number one Telstar. The group were an important part of legendary producer Joe Meek's stable.

"Clem, the band's leader, went on to drum on more than 40 chart-toppers for artists ranging from The Kinks to Tom Jones.

Other notable names coming to perform in Amersham include Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas, who had several of their biggest hits penned by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

"The Dakotas remain one fo the finest bands around, a fact endorsed by their regular appearances on the Solid Silver Sixties tours that play to packed theatres across Britain every year," added Mr Gowling A charity Christmas gig is already in the pipeline. "Apart from some basic costs in putting on the concert, all the performers have offered their services for free and all monies raised will go needy causes," he said.
