FRUSTRATED drivers were caught in Handy Cross hell over the weekend as resurfacing work was carried out.

The notorious roundabout was down to one lane from 9pm on Friday evening until 6am on Monday morning causing tailbacks in all directions.

And the delays to weekend traffic and people off on long weekends could have knock-on effects on the county's other roads as motorists look for short-cuts past the area.

Drivers were warned to leave lots of extra time for their journeys as inevitable jams meant Wycombe Wanderers fans missed the start of the match and diners at TGI Friday's, in Crest Road, arrived annoyed and hungry.

Paul Taylor, the assistant manager at TGI's, said: "It was a nightmare. Everyone who came here was stuck in traffic for hours on end and everyone was miserable."

The restaurant tried to claim compensation from the Highways Agency for loss of business but was refused.

Alan Hutchinson, Wanderers press officer, thinks frustrated fans gave up before they even made it to Adams Park for the first home game against Wrexham on Saturday.

"If you were trying to get there for the start of the match you wouldn't have had a chance.

"We have three more matches that could be affected by this," he said.

Hold-ups are expected to continue throughout the summer as work continues on the roundabout for the next five weekends. The Highways Agency is advising people to plan any trips with Handy Cross in mind and seek alternative routes if possible.

It says all works have been planned to minimise delays and disruptions to drivers.
