MORE than 200 people lined Queen Victoria Road in High Wycombe this evening to protest against plans for a 'community stadium' in Booker.

The protest coincided with Wycombe District Council's cabinet meeting, where bosses were set to decide whether to continue with the stadium scheme.

Wycombe Air Park is the council's preferred site for a new Wycombe Wanderers and Wasps ground, following a public consultation.

There was a similar protest staged last month. Chants of 'Lesley Clarke out' were heard again this evening, along with 'Steve Hayes out' and 'say no to the stadium'.

The protest was organsied by GASP (Groups Against the Stadium).

Keith Francis, from Booker, said: "There's definitely more people than last time. There's a lot of anger around because people feel the cabinet members aren't listening to the people."

Denise Wooley, 53, from Lane End, said: “The roads we've got in Booker and Lane End aren't going to cope with all the extra houses and traffic.”

The accountant, of Marlow Road, added: “We live in the countryside and if we wanted to live near a stadium we'd move to a town. A stadium and new housing development would change our countryside completely.”

A 41-year-old protester from Downley, who asked not to be named, said: “I'm here mainly because of the process the council have gone through with the consultation - listening to many people from outside the area. I think there should be a referendum.

“The Conservatives have got a huge majority in the council but they need to remember they represent the electorate.”

Mary Simmons, of Simmons Way, Lane End, said: “There's no reason whatsoever why they can't have more parking at Adams Park. They say it's because of the Green Belt but then they want to extend into Green Belt in Booker...it's quite crazy.

“I'm a retired PE teacher and I understand the university want pitches, but there is plenty of space for pitches around Wycombe. They had land at Terriers but they sold it to a housing developer.”
