THE world of television from the perspective of a woman working in the industry is the subject of Fern Britton's first novel.

New Beginnings is loosely based around the life of the ex-This Morning presenter, from Holmer Green.

The lead character lives in Buckinghamshire.

Scores of Fern fans queued to to get their copies of the book signed by the celebrity at Waterstone's in High Wycombe's Eden shopping centre yesterday.

Many of the bookworms who attended the store posed in photographs alongside the cheery television personality.

She told the Bucks Free Press it was “loosely” based around her own experiences in TV.

“It's about a lady in television who suddenly has to face choices between does she look after her children, does she enjoy her work, are the people she trusts actually nice people? That sort of thing.

“I must say after 30 years in television I have a lot of stories - some of I have sprinkled in there.

“Some of them are exactly as they happened and others I have changed a lot.”

She added: “It's a good girlie read for mother's day, summer holidays that kind of thing.

“She (the main character) lives in Buckinghamshire and travels up and down the A40 every day, so she does know all about that.”

The novel was not her idea, she said.

But she was persuaded by her publisher after great encouragement and help.

Already, a second novel is underway.

Although it will not be a sequel, she said: “One of the characters in this one might come back for another story.”

But despite her new writing career Fern will not be disappearing from our television screens.

“I'm just about to start a Channel 4 show on Monday so there's a bit of everything going on at the moment,” she said.

“It's the 5 O'Clock show in the old Paul O'Grady slot, which is just called Fern, which is nice.”
