A COUNCIL has backtracked on controversial plans to start charging some pupils a minimum of £250 for their transport on school buses.

The new leadership at Buckinghamshire County has delayed plans to phase in charging for new Year 7 pupils this this year, saying it wants more time to consider the issues.

The money-saving scheme would axe the free travel entitlement for pupils who do not attend their nearest catchment area school, prompting outrage from parents.

Councillor Mike Appleyard, the new deputy leader, said: “The last few weeks have given me the opportunity to listen to public feedback and consider the matter in greater detail.”

He said he would talk with parents and schools to find the “best and fairest way of introducing charges”, but stressed cuts would still have to be made.

The scheme will be postponed until September 2012, though subsidized travel for sixth formers will still end this September.

Cllr Appleyard added more time is also needed to consider the effects of schools moving to academy status.

Council leader Martin Tett said: “It's right that we take a bit more time over home to school transport charging to ensure our future direction reflects both the needs of the council and the views and suggestions from parents and schools.”
