THREE broken fingers didn’t deter Beaconsfield High School pupil Laura Murray from completing a five-day charity bike ride along the south coast.

Laura was joined by her school friend Becky Cottrell on the 150-mile cycle from Studland to Exmouth to raise money for the National Autistic Society.

The 16-year-olds endured the typical punctures and worn down brakes any cyclist would, but those were just slight obstacles compared to what was to come.

On day two the girls were involved in a downhill collision near Lulworth in which Laura suffered serious grazes to her hand and elbow and Becky’s front wheel was bent out of shape.

Laura was advised to seek medical attention, but with the closest hospital 30 miles away, the girls opted to press on.

Laura said: “On our bikes we couldn't get to the nearest hospital very easily so after getting my fingers bandaged up in a pub nearby, I decided to carry on with the ride.”

Four days after the girls reached their destination, Laura had an x-ray on her hand which revealed she had five fractures over three of her fingers.

She said: “Despite all of this trouble, it was all worth it. We had a great adventure and lots of experience. It opened our eyes to more of the world. We had a lot of fun and saw some amazing scenery.”

The pair raised £250 but they hope to increase that total.
