I AM puzzled by letters that have appeared in this paper over the last couple of weeks from readers who feel the Government’s use of a veto at the recent EU summit will damage relations with other member states. I presume they are referring to the organisation that the UK pays a net contribution of around 20 billion a year?

Isn’t it the same body that ruined the UK fishing industry not to mention the livelihoods of fishermen in West Africa, whilst creating a monstrously inefficient agricultural industry in Europe?

Wasn’t it also the same institution that bullied member countries into adopting the Euro, even though it knew their economies didn’t qualify, which has left children in Greece going hungry and created 40% youth unemployment in Southern European states? It may be the case that approximately 50% of our trade is with Europe but the UK has a huge trade deficiency, so who’s worried if we put a few noses out of joint?

The UK veto was used legitimately to protect a unique British industry. If member states are to be demonised for standing up to the more influential leaders, the next war in Europe will be when people decide they want to take back control of their governance, their economies and reinstate democracy.
