A GRITTING lorry has been involved in a crash with a BMW on the M40.

Police said the drivers appear to have escaped with minor injuries after the accident between junctions 2 and 1a.

Officers were called out at about 11.15am.

Inspector Chris Evans said: “A BMW X5 has collided with a gritter lorry. It appears they are minor injuries at this time, it's still early stages but it doesn't look like there are serious injuries at all.”

It is not known yet how many people were in the vehicles.

The vehicles are on the hard shoulder and no longer causing any delays.

Insp. Evans warned drivers to be cautious.

Although the motorway has been cleared by The Highways Agency, ice and snow remains on the ground.

He told motorists: “Just take care in these conditions, it's still very snowy and icy out there. Slow down and take things easy.”

Buckinghamshire County Council said it was not its own gritter and must have belonged to The Highways Agency.

The agency could not confirm this earlier but told the BFP this afternoon it is asking drivers give its gritters plenty of space.

Last night there were reports of 100 cars being abandoned on the M40 between junctions 6 and 4.

However, the agency said today, only about ten at most were actually abandoned.

It did say however that many motorists were stuck behind an HGV that had crashed and were delayed for a time but officials worked hard to clear vehicles affected.

The agency also said in a statement: "During periods of severe weather our advice is not to travel unless your journey is essential.

"If you do need to travel, to be prepared, to check local and national forecasts, to listen to travel bulletins, to take an emergency kit with you including warm clothes, food, water, boots, a torch and spade, and to drive with care, even where roads have been treated.

"We are continuing to work hard to keep roads on our network open.
