NUNS dancing on stage, songs that will make you shake your hips in the aisle and jokes aplenty- Sister Act is a gem of a musical.

Co-produced by Whoopi Goldberg herself, the show closely follows the 1992 movie of the same name as Deloris Van Cartier is forced to hide in a convent after witnessing a murder by her mafia boss boyfriend.

There are, of course, differences as it is adapted for the stage but all for the better.

The all-new score, which has a Philadelphia disco vibe and was written by Alan Menken, has it all- from the toe-tapping numbers like Take Me To Heaven and Fabulous Baby! to the more tender moments with Sister Act and The Life I Never Led.

Relatively unknown rising star, Cynthia Erivo, is amazing as the feisty and likeable Deloris. She has an incredibly strong voice and makes every song she sings her own.

The best scenes are when the nuns are on-stage dancing and singing in their habits- it is a sight to behold.

And really it is the interaction between the nuns which lead to the best lines. As Deloris settles into her new community you start to learn more about what is behind the habit.

The devout Mother Superior is played by Denise Black, who is probably best known for playing hairdresser Denise Osbourne in Coronation Street.

Not only has she a brilliant voice but her comic timing is perfect and she works brilliantly with Erivo as their relationship develops on-stage.

Monsignor O'Hara, who has a bigger role in the show than the film, is played by Michael Starke- best known as playing Sinbad in Brookside.

Starke is clearly enjoying himself in this upbeat and fun musical and this really rubs off on the audience.

Sister Act, A Divine Musical Comedy is now up there in my favourite musicals. More than 150,000 people have seen the musical so far and I can see why. It has everything a brilliant musical should.
