AN iconic view over the River Thames has been recreated following the casting and installation of a new ‘Spirit of Liberty’ statue at Cliveden. The golden statue has been installed on top of the Clock Tower at the National Trust’s Grade 1 listed gardens near Taplow. The winged nude, holding the torch of civilisation and the remains of his broken chains, was lifted into place last month by a 50 metre crane. It was fastened to the orb on top of the tower with the help of two steeplejacks in a complex procedure that took five hours. The new statue is a recreation of the original gold statue of the Spirit of Liberty, which topped Cliveden’s highly ornate Clock Tower in the 1860s.
