Like the many others who watched the recent Olympics I have found myself allured and wanting to try my own hand in competing for Team GB.

OK I admit that it’s a little late in life for me to train for the 100 metres, however I do have a soft spot for shooting.

I am at a disadvantage because I am left eye dominant and right handed, which means that I am not very good with a shotgun or a rifle.

My passion has always been with pistols and since I was a wee whippersnapper I would enjoy shooting with air pistols.

It is a shame that the powers that be decided not to allow handguns in the UK after the Hungerford massacre as I would hope that they do make a return but only to licensed gun clubs.
I was very fortunate to recently visit Hungary and went to a firing range where I fired handguns and a machine gun (AK47 to be specific).

In the last week I’ve found myself at Marlow’s shooting club (after I found out that my old club at the Booker Air Park is no longer there) and I eagerly await a phone call to arrange an appointment with the club secretary in charge of air pistol shooting.

Whist on my visit to the range, I met with a gentleman who is a seasoned pistol shooter and will soon compete for our Country in the Commonwealth games, I can only hope that I can shoot as competently as he.

It will take some time for me to decide whether I am any good or not and wholly dependant on my scoring to see if I’m good enough to compete on any level.

So I hope that my eye ‘cross dominance’ doesn’t let me down and I shall try my hand at the 10 metre air pistol shooting.

Who knows? Perhaps one day I may have the opportunity of representing my Club, County or even Country – but one step at a time, I had better see if I can shot straight and on target first (as it would help!).
