Amersham and Chesham MP's praise for Bucks pothole gangs

AN MP today hailed road repair gangs in south Bucks as an “emergency service” after seeing them in action.

Cheryl Gillan praised the teams who have filled in 10,000 potholes in the south of the county in the last two months, after roads started breaking up following the cold winter.

The Amersham and Chesham MP watched as a three-man crew worked to fill in two Category One holes – the most serious – on London Road in Amersham this afternoon.

The team had started work at 4am today gritting the roads after overnight temperatures dipped to as low as minus four degrees, before getting to work filling in the holes.

Mrs Gillan said: “I hope people can see there's a human side to doing this job. They don't realise the size of the task.

“They are an emergency service for the roads at the moment. Instead of brickbats, we should be saying, 'Thank you very much' to them.

“I didn't realise it took so much. They are doing a real job on our roads.”

Mrs Gillan attended the pothole filling with Cllr Val Letheren, Buckinghamshire County Council's cabinet member for transport.

She said: “This has been an education for me and I have satisfied myself there's a lot of work being done.”

On average council teams fill in 5,000-6,000 potholes every year.

well i hope they werent watching the contract crew i saw in wycombe the other day...they pulled up to a hole, chucked 2 or 3 shovells of tarmac in the hole, raked it level them stamped on it with their boots and got into their truck and buggered off in about 4 minutes flat....i wasnt quick thinking enough to flip my camera onto video mode to film them..and theyre getting £3000 a day for this service......

Any one who drives in South Bucks realises the size of the task.

Alot of the holes that have been filled in are now breaking open again and some have been overfilled so they are now higher than the rest of the road surface. Parts of some roads have been resurfaced, which is really what is in order, but what I don't understand is why they havent done this to the whole length of the road.

Don't you think these blokes are "praised" for their good hard work, because these 2 "butch characters" are standing there watching them. ( i won't say women, because they are not classed as that).

Soon as the "butch characters" left these blokes were back to shove it in and walk away.

I've had my 'fill' of potholes stories for this year.

Let's have a few 'Tropical sunshine expected in Wycombe' or 'No delays on Mways for 37 weeks' articles.

Just humour me.

How many of the 10,000 potholes are once again potholes? They might be working hard but it is to no avail. They should be filled properly, this temporary filling is just a waste of money.

Congratz guys for doing a great job :-)

johnmfritz - Some maybe coming up again but how many are being fixed and staying fixed, stop thinking about the small numbers and start looking at the bigger number.

how do you decide which pothole should be filled in, its child's play, "fill one, miss one" and please explain what road tax is for? station road in amersham is a sham. you should be ashamed.... if that was a hole in your driveway, "would you be happy with a bodge job"?
