POLICE were called in after someone hacked into a council website and posted abusive messages.

The incident was reported on May 9 after a resident spotted the offensive comments on the Amersham Town Council website.

Deputy mayor Nigel Shepherd said the messages were of a sexual nature and were removed immediately. The council is now speaking to consultants about increasing security on the site.

Police spokesman Rebecca Webber said: "The matter has been recorded as an offence under the computer misuse act and is being investigated.

"Anyone who has any information about who the offender may be should contact PC Jonathan Kong via the 24-hour Police Enquiry Centre on 101."
