THE MAYOR of Beaconsfield has spoken of the “honour and privilege” of holding the position as his year-long term draws to a close.
Councillor Graham Corney made the comments during the Mayor’s Report at Beaconsfield’s Annual Town Meeting last week.
He also thanked to his fellow councillors for their support during the speech at the Town Hall on Thursday, which charted the many events, openings and ceremonies he has attended over the past 12 months.
“It has been an absolute joy to represent this town, especially during the glorious jubilee year,” said Cllr Corney.
“It was both and honour and a privilege, and I have been lucky enough to attend some incredible occasions."
The mayor, who has lived in Beaconsfield for 28 years, described some of the greatest experiences of his tenure, during which he has attended over 100 engagements.
Cllr Corney said his proudest moment was being part of the flotilla for the queen’s jubilee Thames Pageant in June, recalling the “electric” atmosphere on the river.
The father of three, who represents Beaconsfield’s West Ward, has supported 10 charities during his time as mayor and said he was proud to have helped achieve most of the council’s goals for the year.
These included new five-a-side football facilities at Holtspur and gym equipment in Malthouse Square.
The mayor had particular praise for town clerk Margaret Mathie and Beaconsfield’s Town crier Dick Smith and their professionalism.
The next holder of the ceremonial position will be decided at the annual meeting of the full council on May 16.
