FITNESS enthusiast Alex Field was the star of a glitzy award ceremony for his ‘amazing achievements’ at a Bourne End gym.

Actress Katherine Kelly, who plays Becky in Coronation Street, presented the 21-year-old with a gong for winning the ‘Member Achievement’ category at the National Fitness Awards in Birmingham.

Alex, who has Down’s Syndrome, rowed more than a million metres last year on a rowing machine at The Exercise Clinic, which is based at Wye Valley School.

His work at the gym also helped him climb Snowdon, canoe 150 miles down the Thames and achieve his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Jason Croucher, manager at The Exercise Clinic, said: “It is a tremendous achievement for Alex to have reached his peak of physical fitness, and it was a very popular decision that he be recognised in that way.

“He put so much hard work into achieving his own personal goals at the gym and we are immensely proud of him.”

Alex, a former Wye Valley pupil, lives in Flackwell Heath and is currently on a work experience placement at the gym.

The awards on November 25 also had The Exercise Clinic shortlisted as one of the country's five best gyms for rehabilitation facilities.

It offers members a range of classes to help local people restore their fitness following surgery or ill health.
