Oarsome challenge for rowers

A NURSE is hoping to smash a world record when she attempts to row across the Atlantic but needs other team mates to make the dream happen.

Clair Desborough, who works at the Riverside Surgery in George Street, High Wycombe, hopes to travel 2,500 miles from La Gomera, in the Canary Islands and end up in Antigua, in the Caribbean.

The 32-year-old will be one of the members in a women's team of four, that will set off on December 2 in a bid to beat the current women's record of 67 days, 7 hours and 20 minutes.

However, if they are to raise the £50,000 needed to achieve this feat they will need businesses and generous people to sponsor them so they can buy the boat and other equipment. And the team are still looking for another two rowers.

"It really doesn't matter whether it is £1 or the whole £50,000, we need people's help as we need to get started." said Clair.

"I have always wanted to do something that challenges me and pushes you out of your comfort zone and this is the ultimate test. It really is the opportunity of a lifetime.

"The most important thing is that we are mentally prepared for it as we will be sailing for two months on a boat in the middle of the ocean so it is definitely a massive challenge."

Her other partner is 24-year-old Sarah Duff. Both of the women live in Henley and row for the Henley-based Upper Thames Rowing Club.

Clair has been rowing since February and Sarah, for around four years. It is the first time they have attempted the feat.

Clair said: "We are currently training five to six times a week as we need to build up our stamina and endurance which is very different to most rowing training which is based on speed."

The decision to enter came by chance after the two rowers were chatting over a drink. The pair knew that Woodvale, the group organising the team, were looking for other members and after applying and going through the interview stage, they were told they were in.

But Clair is under no illusions that it will be a difficult and emotional task.

She said: "Obviously I am going to miss my family, especially at Christ-mas and New Year.

"I will be taking pictures and hopefully the satellite phone will work so I can keep in contact with them."

If you do sponsor the team, you may be able to get your name on the boat or have other sponsorship opportunities.

Anyone who wants to sponsor or join the team can call 01364 644432 or email clairdes- borough @yahoo.co.uk
