Parents, teachers and pupils protested against inconsiderate and dangerous parking near a village school yesterday.

Carrington Junior School and Carrington Infant School joined forces to do their bit to stamp out the parking “nightmare” in Chapel Road during the morning and afternoon rush.

The middle school had three of their Junior Road Support Officer pupils on patrol during Tuesday afternoon as they handed out advice to inconsiderate and illegally parked drivers and thanked those who chose to park in one of two nearby car parks.

Junior school deputy headteacher, Jane Gardener, said: “We want to try and spread the message of positive parking to try and keep the streets near the school as safe as possible.

“It gets really busy along the road with some people parking illegally or dangerously or inconsiderately just because they don’t want to park two minutes away and walk in, it can be a nightmare.

“A number of people do park appropriately, but it only takes one or two to lead to potential problems.”

Some parents echoed the concerns of the schools, highlighting to the former Budgens car park – connected to Chapel Road by an alley-way – and the car park outside Christ Church as a safer and easy place to park.

School crossing patroller, Gilly Fryer, who has marshalled pupils and parents across Chapel Road for about 15 years, says he has seen a couple of near-misses over the years.

He said: “The road can be very bad at times, not everyone does it, but it can be quite dangerous down here in the morning and afternoon.

“Cars park all down one side, others block driveways and they park on the corner very dangerously too.

“In the 15 years there have two very near-misses, but you do wonder what it would be like if there wasn’t someone to help people cross the road.”

Chapel Road residents have also had problems with people parking around the school during opening and closing times.

Debbie Reed, who has lived in the road for ten years, said: “People just don’t care, and think they can park where they like.

“It is known for people to park across your driveway and if you go to ask them to move they tell you to wait or swear at you – I have learnt a lot of new words living down here.

“It is worse for my neighbour who regularly cannot get out of her drive because of bad parking.”
