THE walking charity Ramblers is offering the public the chance to leave their mark on a new long distance path in Bucks.

The Outer Aylesbury Ring walking route is 55 miles long and covers the higher ground of the Aylesbury Vale.

But it cannot officially be launched to the public until £8,000 is raised to ensure appropriate walking guides, maps, signposts and waymarks are in place.

Ramblers are raising money by launching a Secret Signature scheme. For a minimum donation of £3, walking enthusiasts can have their signature on the back of a waymark.

Stephen O’Shea, who came up with the fundraising scheme, said: "We will then use your waymark somewhere on the Outer Aylesbury Ring, but because the signature is on the reverse of the marker, you will never know which one is yours - it's secret."

The route was devised by Aylesbury and District Rambler Roy Johnson, who has walked the entire path, several times, as well as the additional 23 circular walks which branch off the OAR.

"The route really does show off what Aylesbury Vale and the Chilterns have to offer - great countryside, beautiful villages and some spectacular views," said Roy.

"I thought it was worth putting this route on the map and all the walking will have been worth it, when I know that we have created something lasting for generations to come."

The exact details of the routes will not be revealed to the public until everything is signposted. This is to ensure that walkers can confidently navigate the path with the associated maps which are currently being created. It is anticipated that the OAR will be officially launched in May 2013.
