One of Marlow’s oldest watering holes has temporarily shut its doors ahead of a major refurbishment.

The Chequers on High Street – which dates back to the 16th century – is now closed until Monday, March 30, with a new ‘snug ale house’ among the changes.

The plans by owners Brakspear, include changing the name and interior of the Whisky Bar to The Churchill Tap, complete with a specialist beer connoisseur on hand to guide drinkers through the new local ale range.

The main bar area and two dining rooms will also be given a major overhaul.

Manager Andreea Grecu said: “We are really excited about this lovely pub and its beautiful 16th century interior.

“The Chequers is a great place to relax with a warm and friendly vibe and we think the new interiors will only increase its charm.”

Dating back over 400 hundred years, the Chequers features ships’ timbers used in the original building and was taken over by Henley-based brewer Brakspear in 1893.

The pub will reopen on Monday, March 30, with a pre-bank holiday party on Thursday, April 2 from 7pm.
