A former Marlow mayor has spoken out this week over the "growing problem" of cyclists choosing to ride on pavements in the town.

This week, residents raised fears over a new £300,000 cycleway between Marlow and Marlow Bottom, saying the shared route could cause a serious accident for pedestrians.

Although sections of this cycleway project operate as 'shared space', Mr Done wrote to the MFP complaining the safety of those on foot is at risk elsewhere in town.

And with police having limited power to punish drivers parking cars on pavements, the Liberal Democrat former councillor said fines should be imposed for reckless cycling.

He said: "There is one area where the police do have the authority to act, and that is in the matter of cycling on the pavement.

"It would be interesting to discover when the Police last issued an Fixed Penalty Notice for such an infringement.

"I am not optimistic, having recently witnessed a PCSO stepping out of the way to let a cyclist cycle past him on the pavement in Spittal Street.

"Also, the maximum fines for dangerous cycling are currently £2,500 and for careless cycling, £1,000. Please let us see some action on this increasing problem."
