INDEPENDENT councillor Darren Hayday will form part of the official opposition group at County Hall.

Cllr Hayday, who won the West Wycombe ward at last week's election, will become deputy leader of the UKIP and Independent group at Bucks County Council.

He will align himself with the six UKIP members who were also voted in last week, although he has stressed he has no plans to join the party.

Cllr Hayday told the Bucks Free Press: "We are all to be unwhipped and each of us will be able to vote on matters each way that we choose to, unlike the other parties which will be whipped.

"Under the new Group system of county councils with regards to proportional representation, this would mean that I would have more of a say within a group rather than being left alone in the cold as the only member of the council being an Independent member.

"We will accept anyone that also chooses to join us if they defect from the other parties, especially as hearing in the Queen's speech that HS2 looks like a done deal."

He added: "I have no plans to join UKIP. I was elected to represent the people of West Wycombe as an Independent and that is what I shall continue to do."

Cllr Andy Huxley will be the Group Opposition Leader.
