WATCHDOGS from the general public are wanted to keep tabs on a newly created police chief.
Police and Crime Commissioners will be elected around the country, including for Thames Valley, for the first time in November.
These new bosses will aim to cut crime and make the police more transparent and accountable to the public, the Home Office said.
Two citizens in Thames Valley are being sought out to take a scrutiny role, overseeing the work of the new commissioner and examinimg policing plans in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
The recruits will join the Thames Valley Police and Crime Panel.
This will comprise a councillor from each of the 18 authorities in the Thames Valley, as well as the two independent co-optees.
Buckinghamshire County Council, which is helping to find the new panel members, said in a statement: “The panel is keen to encourage applications from anyone who feels they could take on this exciting and important role.
“The role of the co-optees is to act as an independent voice on the Panel and selection will be based on the knowledge, skills and expertise the individuals can bring.
“The co-optees could have a professional background in an area such as community safety, criminal justice or victim support. Alternatively, a strong track record of relevant voluntary work would be just as valuable. “Applications are being particularly encouraged from under-represented groups.”
Applicants need to be able to give one day per month to the role and attend a minimum of six meetings each year.
They will serve a four year term.
No allowance is paid for the roles, but travel expenses will be paid and training provided.
The closing date for applications is July 13.
