World Book Day is a magical day for people to dress up as their favourite book characters. We choose to celebrate world book day so we can promote reading, learning and fun! Every year, Stony Dean School holds an assembly to celebrate World Book Day. Students are invited to dress up as their favourite characters and authors and take part in a competition. In recent years, we have also held a book fayre to encourage students to read for leisure. I interviewed the English Department to get more information about this year’s plans.

What is this year’s world book day theme?

“The theme this year is influential women. World Book Day falls on the same day as international women’s day as it is important we celebrate this so we can strive for equality.” – Mrs Morgans

I think this is a great theme as it supports women’s rights and equal opportunities for all. There isn’t very many well-known female authors so we want to show them some appreciation!

What do the competition winners get?

“There is a prize for the top 3 costumes. Also, up to 6 students will be selected to take part in a local fundraising activity with me!” – Miss Keighran

Can you give us an example of what kind of books will see at the book fayre?

“We have a huge range of books from mystery to fantasy books such as Percy Jackson. We also have non-fiction books and journals. I personally recommend One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus.” – Mr Munn

What charity are we raising money for this year?

“We will be raising money for Inspire Bucks. They used to make Christmas box donations for disadvantaged and vulnerable families. Now they provide well being packages for our local community.” – Mrs Drake

I think this is a great charity for our school to raise money for as it helps children who don’t have that much. It is important to help disadvantaged member of our community because everyone has the right to know there are people looking out for them and want to help them. The whole world deserves to be happy.

Overall, World Book Day is really looked forward to by our school community as staff and student both get into dressing up! I am looking forward to seeing the creative ideas everyone comes up with, as well as appreciating famous female authors.
