THIS busy scene of shoppers crossing the road was taken in High Wycombe High Street in the year that the Scrabble board game made its debut and Elvis Presley appeared on television for the first time.

The photo was taken in 1955.

It shows shoppers crossing at the junction of Church Street, Paul’s Row and High Street, viewed from the west end, north side of the High Street, opposite the Guildhall and looking west towards White Hart Street.

Daisy Stevens, 75, of Hillary Road, Stokenchurch, recognised herself in the picture whilst browsing on the SWOP website.

She said: “I was absolutely amazed to see myself and my son and daughter – I didn’t know it was taken. I lived in the town and was probably going to visit my mother-in-law. It must have been a nice day because my little Carol was only wearing a skirt and cardigan, no coat or anything.”

Son Tony was two and daughter Caroline four at the time.

Were you one of the shoppers crossing the street? What do you remember about the day? Perhaps you recognise a brother, sister, parent or uncle?
