THE all-conquering Royal Grammar School rugby team are looking forward to a Wembley appearance as a curtain raiser to rugby league's prestigious Challenge Cup final.

Although well known as frequent visitors to Twickenham in rugby union tournaments, year seven pupils at the High Wycombe school have only recently turned to trying their hand at the 13 man version of the game.

But that hasn't stopped them from leaving a trail of beaten teams in their wake and on Thursday they booked their place in the National Rugby League Final with another comprehensive victory.

If that wasn't enough, they will take to Wembley's hallowed turf ahead of one of the biggest dates in the rugby league calendar - the Challenge Cup final.

RGS year sevens entered the National Rugby League competition with a focus on improving their skills, tenacity and defence but have achieved well above expectations in reaching Wembley, where they will face possibly the country’s most recognised rugby league school in the shape of Castleford Academy.

Team coach David Durning said: "These boys have had a string of successes in various competitions this year, and it is a brilliant celebration of their efforts that they have reached the national final at Wembley.

"I haven’t heard of another school who has had teams at both the Daily Mail Schools Cup Final and the National Schools Rugby League Final. The boys here are very talented and will almost certainly go on to great things in the future."

The regional section of the competition started with comfortable wins over Hemmel School, Aylward Academy and RGS Colchester, before a 58-4 hammering of previous winners Howard of Effingham in the regional final.

The national rounds started with a hard fought 20-14 win against St Peters of Wigan in the last 16 to set up a mouth-watering quarter final showdown with the favourites and Yorkshire Champions, Brooksbank school.

Leaving at 6.30am to head to Halifax didn't faze the team, although Brooksbank fought back from 14-0 down to level before a late Efan Morris try sent RGS through.

That set up last week's semi final against Dowdales School, which they won comprehensively after racking up nine tries on their way to a 52-16 thrashing to seal a place at Wembley.

They will play under the famous arch on Saturday, August 24.

Notable performances by Efan Morris, James Baldwin, Henry Chilcott, Oscar Thomas, Jack Wakely and Matvey Boguslavski have helped RGS achieve success in a game the team only took up four months ago.
