HIGH Wycombe CC teenager Saif Zaib is following in the footsteps of Alistair Cook and co.

This week the 15-year-old is playing in an elite cricket festival that has produced 50 England internationals in it's 27-year history, and after that he'll return to Wycombe to mull over two county contract offers.

Zaib is playing for the South and West in the Banbury Cricket Festival in Durham this week.

He was presented with his cap by former England star Paul Collingwood at the start of a festival which brings together the most promising young players from across the country in a week-long regional tournament.

England captain Cook and bowler Steve Finn both competed at the festival in recent seasons.

Meanwhile, Zaib has been offered academy contracts with both Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire while Sussex are also understood to be interested.

Dad Sajid said: “We haven’t decided what to do yet.”

Zaib’s progress has not come out of the blue though.

He has been one of the stand-out performers for Wycombe’s first team this summer and has impressed every season he’s been at the club.

Sajid said: “He’s been at Wycombe since U10s and been outstanding in every age group.

“He’s always been the top run scorer and at U12 level he scored 940 runs in the season.

“Last year, when he was still U14, he was thrown into the national competition at Banbury and was Wycombe’s most economical bowler, and this year he’s held his place in the side on merit and scored valuable runs down the order.”

Zaib is a genuine all-rounder, combining run scoring with left arm spin.
