WASPS have scored exactly the same number of points as they’ve conceded this season, but you wouldn’t know it looking at the table.

One win from five games is their Aviva Premiership return and they sit second from bottom ahead of Sunday’s visit from Leicester.

But five teams above them have a worse points difference and it’s the belief that those fine margins must start evening out that gives Wasps a more sanguine outlook than you might imagine.

Director of rugby Dai Young said: “Where we’re sitting now is unrealistic. We’re three points off sixth and four or five of us are on the same points.

“We haven’t gone to a place and lost where we won last season. So it’s not a case of being behind the eight ball from where we were last season.

“And I’ve been pleased with big aspects of our game. The frustrating part is the individual errors we make.

“But sometimes I need to pinch myself and realise how many players we’ve got out and what firepower we’ve got to come back in.

“Some of the players playing now have come up from the Championship and these boys are still learning, the same as Sam Jones and Elliot Daly were learning the season before.

“What we’re doing is building strength in depth, but more by accident than design.

“But we’re at the stage now where we need to start picking up some points.

“The next two games could be a big swing for two or three teams. You could end up in the mix or under a bit of pressure.”

It’s not surprising that their single win came in their only game at Adams Park.

Wycombe was something of a refuge for the black and golds last season and Young admits it needs to remain that way this year if his team are going to begin climbing.

He said: “If you want to do anything you have to win your home games.

“We were quite successful in most of the games we played at Adams Park last season. We turned it into a little bit of a fortress and were quite pleased with what we achieved there.

“It fell away towards the end of the season but we’ve started off quite well there again and we need to keep that momentum going.”
