MATT McClure said he had no qualms passing up the chance to score in three successive games as he handed penalty responsibility to his strike partner.

With regular taker Dean Morgan on the bench, Blues' five goal joint top scorer immediately put himself forward to take the spot kick against Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday after Steven Craig was fouled.

Having scored in both of his last two games McClure was on course to make it a hat trick - but instead he allowed Craig to step up as the Scotsman scored for the first time since August.

And the Northern Ireland U21 international had an impact later on in the game as he set up the crucial second goal for Gary Doherty.

He said: "I went over there but he said he really wanted it. I think he deserved a goal for winning it - I didn't really argue with him too much. I'm happy for him to get on the scoresheet.

"I didn't get one tonight but I had the flick on for Doc's goal so I still played a little part in it. If I'm not scoring, so long as I'm making a positive impact than I'm happy."

Wanderers hadn't won any of their previous five matches ahead of Tuesday's FA Cup first round replay and McClure said the 2-0 win was much needed - and deserved.

He said: "I think we needed a win just to stop the rut a little bit. Today was the perfect way to do it.

"We thought we'd get a goal earlier. We had a few chances in the first half but didn't manage to stick one away. To get one early in the second half killed them a little bit - we could see they were down after that.

"We played well against Swindon and Crewe last time but we didn't get the win."

McClure netted in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at Swindon but suffered dizziness and loss of memory following a clash of heads with an opponent - meaning he had to rely on the DVD to remind himself of what happened.

He said: "My mum recorded it for me - I don't remember it at all. The one thing I did remember the next day was when Steve went over and hurt his knee ten minutes in. After that I don't remember much.

"I've seen stuff on the video - I've seen the clash of heads, it was quite a heavy one."
