DAI Young has described Wasps’ 40-point mauling of Grenoble in France as outstanding as his team maintained their grip on Pool Four of the Amlin Challenge Cup.

They ran in seven tries away from home to make it three wins from three in the competition.

Director of rugby Young said: “We were outstanding. I certainly wouldn’t have put money on us coming out here and beating them by 40 points.

“They are hard to beat at home but we were on top all night.”

The result backs up their hard-fought win over London Irish and, while the pack were again impressive, the backs at last came into their own with five of their teams’ seven tries.

Young said: “The pack were outstanding early doors and the backs really spread the ball really well and stretched them.

“I was pleased with one and all. We had a great attitude to back up the win last week and I couldn’t have asked for any more from them.

“We had periods where we defended for a while but we kept our shape really well.

“When we had chances we were clinical and they only looked threatening from a few of our mistakes.”

With half the group games now gone, Wasps are in prime position to qualify for the knockout stages again.

However, they still have to negotiate a trip to Bayonne in early January and Young wants his team to at least protect their four-point lead at the top in the next round of fixtures.

He said: “We have to back it up next week at home and realise the job isn’t done.

“We need to push for a five-point win next weekend.”

With Viadana at home to end the group games, Wasps would be virtually guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals if they can return from Bayonne still on top.

Young said: “The two seasons I have been here we have qualified out of our groups and we want to keep moving forward and we are determined as a group to come out of this pool on top.”
