DREW Roberts scored twice as Chesham United made up three points on the sides around them at the top of the Southern Premier League.

They beat Biggleswade Town 2-1 and with leaders Hemel Hempstead and Cambridge City, who were second at the start of play, both losing, it turned into a super Saturday for Andy Leese’s men.

He said: “It was one of those weekends. It’s always good to win, but it’s better when you see some of the other results.”

Chesham leapfrogged Cambridge as a result, but no less pleasing was the form of top-scorer Roberts.

He was rested over Christmas but returned with a goal against Hemel and his brace on Saturday took his tally for the season to 25.

Leese said: “He hit 25 on Saturday and in the second week of January that’s not bad.

“He consistently gets that number of goals and on Saturday I thought he was back to something like his best.

“I left him out a couple of games and he wasn’t too happy with me.

“But I just felt that 30-odd games in he needed a break. I’ll say I was right and he’ll say I wasn’t.”

Roberts was the sharp edge of a clinical 45 minutes from Chesham on Saturday.

His goals came after six and 20 minutes and although the hosts dropped off the pace a little after the turnaround, allowing Biggleswade to halve the deficit after 48 minutes, they held on for all three points.

Leese said: “Our performance was absolutely first class in the first half. We played as well as we’ve played all season in the first half.

“I think the break has done us good. We’ve regrouped. The intensity was there again, we were passing it well and creating lots of opportunities.

“In the second half we rediscovered some old habits and it was quite an even game, but we weren’t too bad.

“I’d say we were nine out of ten in the first half and six out of ten in the second.”

Despite last weekend’s results though – and the prospect of a trip to second from bottom AFC Totton on Saturday – Leese isn’t getting too far ahead.

He said: “Hemel are still 11 points ahead and that’s quite a gap. They’d have to lose two or three more games in quick succession and we’d have to win two or three more.

“And don’t forget there are teams behind us who have games in hand.

“But we’re back on track. We want two points a game and we’ve got 52 points from 26 games now.

“We just have to focus on ourselves and keep putting points on the board.”
